⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE: Athena Le Perron is temporarily closed

Athena Le Perron is located near the intense fire that is severely affecting the High Fens.

Due to severe smoke from the large wildfire in the High Fens, Camping Athena Le Perron is currently inaccessible.

Guests will not be able to check in through Tuesday, August 18, at the latest. Based on current projections, we hope to be able to reopen the campground on Wednesday, August 19. However, this depends on how the fire develops, the level of smoke, and the instructions from emergency services.

Alternative for guests who have booked a campsite

Campground guests who have booked a stay at Athena Le Perron for next week may be able to stay at Athena Ossendrecht or Athena Helios instead.

Would you like to rebook your stay at Athena Ossendrecht or Athena Helios? If so, please contact the respective campground directly to discuss your options and availability.

An exceptionally vulnerable nature reserve

The fire in the High Fens has become the largest wildfire in Belgian history. According to current reports, approximately 2,700 hectares of wilderness have already been affected, and hundreds of people had to be evacuated as a precaution.

The consequences for residents, visitors, and businesses in the area are far-reaching. But above all, this is a tragedy for the High Fens themselves: a unique and exceptionally vulnerable natural area home to rare plants, animals, and peatland landscapes. The recovery of such natural areas can take many years.

Some rain is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully, that rain will help fight the fire and, as a result, reduce the smoke. However, the situation remains uncertain for the time being.

Thanks to everyone who helps

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the fire department, emergency services, nature conservation staff, local authorities, volunteers, and everyone else involved who are working tirelessly to bring the fire under control.

We would also like to thank everyone who is helping to provide shelter and support to those who have had to leave their homes as a precautionary measure.

We are closely monitoring the situation.

This post will be updated tomorrow, Monday, August 17, as soon as more details are available.

You can find more information and the latest updates on the fire in the VRT NWS live blog.

Stay safe.
